Σεμινάριο του Nokia Technology Center

Το IEEE NTUA Student Branch σε συνεργασία με το Nokia Technology Center της Αθήνας διοργανώνει ημερίδα για την ανάλυση τεχνολογιών που αναπτύσει η εταιρεία στον τομέα των τηλεπικοινωνιών και της πληροφορικής.

Το σεμινάριο θα πραγματοποιήσει ο κύριος Γεώργιος Γκέλλας της Nokia, την Τετάρτη 4 Ιουνίου από τις 11:00 μέχρι τις 19:00 στο Αμφιθέατρο Πολυμέσων της Κεντρικής Βιβλιοθήκης του ΕΜΠ.

The Evolved Packet Core (EPC) lecture aims at familiarizing the audience with the EPC use cases, the functionalities needed to support them, the relevant concepts and architecture. The standardized functional entities shall be described, notions like session management, mobility management, QoS, policy control, charging etc. shall be analyzed. Basic procedures of the 3GPP standards shall be explained. Voice over LTE (VoLTE) shall be presented as an example of an EPC service. In the context of the VoLTE, interworking with the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) shall be described and special attention shall be paid to dedicated bearers.

The Telco Cloud lecture aims at providing the background needed in order to embrace cutting edge IT technologies, like cloud computing and Software Defined Networks (SDN), in the telecommunications area and especially the mobile broadband. In this context a basic introduction to both of these technologies shall be covered, together with a short description of some relevant open source projects, namely the OpenStack (a fully fledged IaaS solution) and the OpenDayLight (the most recent open source SDN controller). The benefits of introducing the abovementioned technologies to the telco shall be analyzed. Some recent proposals on an SDN based EPC architecture shall be presented. Cognition shall be shortly addressed. Last but not least a short overview of Nokia’s Technology Vision 2020 shall be explained.

About the presenter: Dr. Georgios Gkellas received his MSc and PhD degrees in Nuclear and High Energy, Particle Physics from the University of Athens. He had a post doctorial position in the context of the EU project HaPHEEP (Hadronic Physics with High Energy Electromagnetic Probes) in the University of Bonn. With 15 years of experience in the Telecom and IT areas in various positions as analyst, architect, engineer, account manager, business development. Dr. Gkellas is constantly following cutting edge technologies in his area of involvement like cloud computing, software defined networking, cognition, future internet.

Static whole body PET/CT imaging is considered the standard clinical approach to diagnosis and treatment response monitoring for a wide range of oncologic malignancies. Alternative PET imaging protocols involving dynamic acquisition of temporal images have been implemented in the research setting, allowing quantification of tracer dynamics, an important capability for tumor characterization and cancer treatment response monitoring. Nonetheless, dynamic protocols have been confined to single bed-coverage limiting the axial field-of-view to ~15-20 cm, and have not been translated to the routine clinical context of whole-body PET imaging for the inspection of disseminated disease. On the contrary, in this talk we will pursue a transition for the first time to the novel dynamic whole body PET parametric imaging, by presenting, within a unified framework, clinically feasible multi-bed dynamic PET acquisition protocols a s well as advanced parametric imaging methods. We investigate solutions to address the challenges of: (i) long acquisitions, (ii) small number of dynamic frames per bed, and (iii) non-invasive quantification of kinetics in the plasma. A novel dynamic (4D) whole body PET acquisition protocol of ~45min total length will be presented, composed of (i) an initial 6-min dynamic PET scan over the heart, followed by (ii) a sequence of multi-pass multi-bed PET scans over the whole body. Moreover, a set of advanced linear regression schemes will be presented to particularly address the presence of high levels of noise in an attempt to achieve a better trade-off between the mean-squared error (MSE) and the Contrast to Noise (CNR) metrics for enhanced quality in task-based imaging.

Dr. Nicolas A. Karakatsanis was born in 1982 in Athens. He is currently a research associate in the Division of Nuclear Medicine at University Hospital of Geneva, Switzerland. He also maintains a close and active collaboration with the Division of Nuclear Medicine of the School of Medicine of Johns Hopkins University, USA, where he had been appointed a postdoctoral research fellow from 2011 to 2013. Dr Karakatsanis received his Bachelor and Masters joint Diploma as well as his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2005 and 2010 respectively from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece. His PhD thesis , supervised by Dr Konstantina Nikita, was on the optimization of PET systems performance and data acquisition protocols using Monte Carlo simulations, while his current interests focus on truly quantitative whole-body PET parametric imaging. He has published more than 10 articles in international journals and over 40 articles in peer-reviewed conference proceedings.
